The purpose of the study: to investigate the attitudes and behaviors of Lithuanian citizens towards citizen science and societal resilience.
Major investigated questions: at the beginning of the survey, respondents were asked to assess Lithuanian society (Resistant to lies; Believing in politicians' populist statements; 7 in total). After presenting a list of various forms of participation in social and political life, respondents were asked to indicate whether they had done any of these things in the past year; earlier; had not done so, but might do so; had not done so and would never do so under any circumstances (I signed an online petition; I signed a paper petition; 8 in total). Accordingly, respondents were asked to evaluate scientists' invitations to the public to participate in scientific research – whether they had done at least one of these things in the past year; before that; had not done so, but might do so; did not do so and would never do so under any circumstances (I participated in scientific research as a respondent; I participated in a citizen science project; 7 in total). The survey examined the extent to which Lithuanian residents who participated in the survey are personally interested in politics, science, innovation, and technology. The following set of statements was used to investigate respondents' confidence in their ability to engage in science, their understanding of science, and their attitudes toward public participation in scientific activities (People like me have little ability to engage in science; I don't think scientists care about how to involve people like me in science; 6 in total). The next set of statements assessed public trust in science, the motivations and openness of scientists, and attitudes toward government investment in science (We can usually trust that scientists publish reliable research results; Most scientists engage in scientific activity only for personal gain, not for the benefit of society; 5 in total). Respondents were asked which social groups contribute most to strengthening society's resilience to various threats. We also wanted to know if scientists would agree to participate in a scientific project that would require them to spend time collecting data for free, sending it to scientists, participating in short training sessions, or otherwise contributing to scientific research. After presenting the set of questions, the reasons that would be important and encourage participation in a scientific project were examined (the opportunity to contribute to scientific research for the benefit of society; cooperation and acquaintance with scientists; 6 in total). It was clarified whether respondents would participate in protests or otherwise actively express their disapproval if they believed that politicians were seeking to restrict democracy in Lithuania; seeking to limit the independence of the courts from political power; seeking to restrict the rights of the media and freedom of speech. The survey examined the extent to which our society is prepared to withstand crises and recover from them, such as natural disasters, pandemics, economic crises, etc. At the end of the survey, a list of Lithuanian institutions was presented, and respondents were asked to assess their confidence in the ability of various institutions to respond effectively to and manage extreme situations.
Socio-demographic characteristics: gender, age, level of education, membership in organizations, religion, marital status, nationality, political views, political participation, size of household, respondent's average personal income, place of residence, working situation of the respondent and of his/her spouse or partner.
