Abstract: |
<p>This dataset contains data on the classification of the structure of the Lithuanian book publishing market in 2019–2023, based on the identification of market participants according to publishers’ legal status and primary type of economic activity.</p> <p>Data collection began during the preparation of the bachelor’s thesis "Crowdfunding Opportunities for Book Publishing" at Mykolas Romeris University in the 2024–2025 academic year. The initial logic for classifying publishers applied in the Bachelor’s thesis was subsequently expanded, and, in the deposited version of the data, the classification was further validated by assigning EVRK/NACE economic activity codes linked from government open data registers.</p> <p>Legal-entity records were linked using the national legal-entity code, adding main economic activity codes (EVRK Rev. 2) and other register-derived attributes. EVRK codes and legal-form labels were mapped to the study-specific publisher categories; where EVRK codes did not clearly reflect a publisher’s activities, additional information was identified through manual verification using publicly available web sources.</p> |

Core data on book publishers in Lithuania and the number of books they published in 2019–2023 were collected from the annual Publishing Statistics of Lithuania issued by the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania (LNB). These statistics are compiled through ISBN-based bibliographic registration and the submission of legal deposit copies to the LNB, and therefore reflect counts of publications that were actually published and deposited in the national repository. To verify publisher identity, legal status, and main economic activities and to support the classification, additional information was obtained from: (i) the Lithuanian Publishers catalogue administered by the LNB (https://ibiblioteka.lt/metis/lithuanian-publishers); (ii) publicly available legal-entity data and open-statistics resources provided by the State Enterprise Centre of Registers (https://www.registrucentras.lt/atviri-duomenys-ir-statistika); and (iii) the dataset “Juridinių asmenų ekonominės veiklos rūšys ir instituciniai sektoriai” (“Economic activities and institutional sectors of legal entities”) accessed via the Lithuanian Open Data portal/API (get.data.gov.lt; https://data.gov.lt/datasets/2088). Legal-entity records were linked using the national legal-entity code, adding main economic activity codes (EVRK Rev. 2) and other register-derived attributes. EVRK codes and legal-form labels were mapped to the study-specific publisher categories; where EVRK codes did not clearly reflect a publisher’s activities, additional information was identified through manual verification using publicly available web sources. Data cleaning and validation were also performed. |
