The series "Survey Data > Human Rights" contains survey data that allow to study Lithuanian public opinion about the state of the human rights protection system, the ways in which people defend their rights when violated, and their evaluations of the effectiveness of institutions protecting human rights.

<b><i> The purpose of the study</i></b>: to analyze the Lithuanian system for the protection of human rights, identify how people protect violated (abused) rights and how they assess effectiveness of various institutions assuring the human rights. <br><b><i>Major investigated questions</i></b>: respondents were asked whether the information about human rights is sufficient and whether they know where to appeal if human rights are violated. They were also asked whether they experienced the violation of human rights by themselves during recent years and whether they appealed because of violation of human rights. Those respondents, who did not appeal, were asked why did not appeal, and those who appealed, were asked where they tried to defend their violated rights. Respondents were asked who determines whether a person is guilty for doing a crime and to identify which certain actions violate human rights. It was also examined what social group is discriminated in Lithuania the most. Respondents were asked what human rights are mostly violated and what institutions mostly violate the human rights. <br><b><i>Socio-demographic characteristics</i></b>: gender, age, education, occupation, nationality, monthly family income per one family member, place of residence, region.

The first domain only included county capitals and other cities/towns. Within each stratum primary sampling units were selected in proportion to its population. Primary sampling units in the strata of county capitals and cities/towns were streets (equivalent, not further divided). From the list of streets required amount of primary sampling units were selected using systematic random sampling.</li> <li>In the second stage, in each selected primary sampling unit in the strata of county capitals and other cities/towns 10 households were selected. The first household was selected from the table of random numbers. Villages with no streets were excluded from the sample.

In order to check the quality of interviewer's work the data collector contacted by phone 10 percent of respondents. Procedure of sampling and compliance with questionnaire instructions were verified. Logic and accuracy of filling out questionnaires were checked by the data collector's department of interviewers.

10 percent of the data were checked for questionnaire keying in quality by the data input department. Possible mistakes of coding and congruence of answers to questions in the questionnaire were additionally checked.
