Important territorial changes of counties before 1921:
According to the Peace Treaty of August 11, 1920 between Latvia and Russia several territories of the Russian governorates of Vitebsk and Pskov were incorporated into the Ludza County ([lav] Ludzas apriņķis) (later renamed to the Abrene / Jaunlatgale County ([lav] Abrenes / Jaunlatgales apriņķis)).
After some battles with Russia and Lithuania and after drawing the border between Latvia and Lithuania in 1921, several territories from Lithuania were incorporated into the Ilukste County ([lav] Ilūkstes apriņķis). In 1925 two new counties were formed:
Jaunlatgale County ([lav] Jaunlatgales apriņķis) (formerly part of the territory of the Ludza County ([lav] Ludzas apriņķis).
Madona County ([lav] Madonas apriņķis) (formerly part of the territory of the Cesis County ([lav] Cēsu apriņķis) and the Valka County ([lav] Valkas apriņķis)). In 1938 Jaunlatgale County ([lav] Jaunlatgales apriņķis) was renamed into the Abrene County ([lav] Abrenes apriņķis). |
