Dataverse collection Project The Historical Sociology of Modern Restorations (2018-2022) hosts historical statistics data collected in the research project "Historical Sociology of Modern Restorations: A Cross-Time Comparative Study of Post-Communist Transformation in the Baltic States" implemented by a team of Vilnius University researchers lead by prof. Zenonas Norkus. This research is funded by the European Social Fund according to the activity "Improvement of researchers’ qualification by implementing world-class R&D projects" of Measure No. 09.3.3-LMT-K-712 "Improvement of scientists’, other researchers’ and students’ qualification by implementing practical scientific activities".

The project was started in January, 2018 and the first data sets were published in June, 2018. 201 new datasets of historical statistics about the Baltic states were published by the end of the project in January, 2022.

The aim of the project is to construct and empirically apply a new sociological theory whose subject matter is social restorations in the modernising and modern societies. The theory is constructed comparing the course and outcomes of two great modern revolutions (French 1789 and Russian 1917). Starting as world revolutions, both exported themselves and culminated in the rise of the great empires (Napoleonic and Soviet). Restorations after their fall included restoration of international order, states, domestic political or economic systems, destroyed by revolutions. Postcommunist Baltic countries are most conspicuous or ideal typical cases of modern social restorations, because postcommunist transformation in these countries comprised restoration of independent state, capitalism and democracy. The framing of postcommmunist transformation as restoration grounds new method of the assessment of its success: by cross-time comparison of the economic and social progress under original (prerevolutionary), intermediate (postrevolutionary) and restored social system. The main obstacle for application of this method to the economic and social history of Baltic countries in the 20th-early 21st century is scarcity of cross-nationally and cross-time comparable data about the pre-WWI and interwar periods.

After solving this problem, the Lithuanian electronic historical data systems (HDS), already created using EU structural funds as part of Lithuanian Humanities and Social Sciences data archive (LiDA), will be enriched by new historical statistical data sets, allowing to compare the progress of Baltic countries during the interwar and restored independence periods. The expansion of the Lithuanian electronic HDS by new data documented in English and Lithuanian according to international standards (DDI, DC, MARC21) secures securing the cumulative continuity in the use of EU structural funds and enables all users of historical statistics data in Lithuania to improve their advanced R&D competences and skills up to the level of EU leading countries level.
